ZJJZ Architecture Practice is a Shanghai-based architecture studio that has completed a mushroom-formed wood house in a pine forest of Jiangxi in China. A wooden house in the forest, named ‘The Mushroom’ is a structure that is located in a pine forest of Jiangxi, creating a relationship between nature and architecture, which is the essential approach of ZJJZ Architecture Practice.

The wood house, covering a 50-square-meter area is composed of two simple volumes. The main volume is used for a guest room space and forms the mushroom itself, with a panoramic window set up near the viewing height. The guests are immersed in the surrounding nature when leaning on the bed or sitting on chairs.

Linked by the small-scale stairs, the loft serves as a child area. The pure white cone-shaped roof is rounded on top which creates a sense of unbounded extension to the space. The storage space and bathroom are both arranged in a simple rectangular volume, which is then inserted into the main body of the mushroom part. Avoiding the view from the pedestrian path to ensure privacy, there is a horizontal window designed next to the bathtub, while also bringing nature into the space.

There is also a circular skylight at the top that introduces different expressions of shadows and light with the change of weather and time. This space also serves as a space where the guests often visit and linger, which can also be called the entrance lobby of the house.

To minimize the impact of construction on the site, the mushroom part of the house is raised on a steel structure.  ZJJZ Architecture Practice said that as time goes by, green plants on the ground will gradually spread to embrace the building.

The roof which is cone-shaped is clad in pine woods and the rest of the house is coated with granolithic concrete. The material changes its color with time and humidity, which allows the building to go in harmony with the surrounding natural environment.
